1. Get a baseline DEXA scan and a full eye exam now. Bone loss and vision changes start silently in your late 30s, and the version you catch at 38 is decades cheaper than the crisis you discover at 58. Boring scans are how the future stays open.
2. Write down the exact day your life felt most alive, and reverse-engineer why. It usually wasn’t the money or the milestone — it was a place, a people, a pace. Most people chase the wrong things for decades because they never decoded that one memory.
3. Pre-decide who you become if everything falls apart. Most people freeze in a crisis because they’ve never once imagined themselves surviving one. Quietly knowing “even then, I’d be okay, and here’s what I’d do” is the calm nobody can take from you.
4. Build a skill your job can’t fire you out of. By 40, your industry can vanish faster than your loyalty to it. One thing you own — a craft, an audience, a client list — is the difference between a layoff being a setback or being a free fall.
5. Have the conversation you’ve avoided for years. With your parent, your partner, your old self. Unsaid words don’t vanish — they live in your body as tension you can’t trace. Saying them, however clumsily, frees the next decade.
6. Treat sleep like income, because it is. Past 36, one bad night wrecks your mood and judgment for two days. The “sleep when I’m dead” crowd is running on borrowed health.
