How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Business (Full GEO Tutorial)

Premise: ~60% of consumers now check products/services with ChatGPT before buying. SEO isn’t dead, but GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — being visible and citable to LLMs (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) — is the new layer.

On-site technique 1 — open the door in robots.txt

  • Check yoursite.com/robots.txt. WordPress default allows all user-agents already; custom files must explicitly allow each crawler.
  • Add explicit allow lines for the AI crawlers: OpenAI/ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google. (Resource code linked in her description.) Explicit beats implicit — you’re stating LLMs may access and crawl.

On-site technique 2 — schema markup (JSON-LD)

  • Crawlers read HTML, not rendered JavaScript — JS-heavy sites are opaque to them. JSON-LD schema spoon-feeds “here’s what I want you to know” invisibly to humans.
  • Workflow: paste her prompt (“You are a GEO specialist…”) + your URL into Claude → it extracts 6–10 FAQs from the page and outputs FAQ schema in JSON-LD → embed. Do this for every page, not just the homepage.

On-site technique 2b — a dedicated FAQ page

  • The Q&A pairs people actually type into ChatGPT should exist on your site so chatbots scrape answers straight from you.
  • Four prompts (in description) generate question sets, e.g.: “I’m [customer description] looking for [product type] — top 20 questions I’d ask before purchase.” Use AI for answers → JSON-LD → paste into WordPress/GHL/whatever builder.

Writing answers that get cited (3 tips)

  1. Expert quotations — attributed quotes carry authority/citability. Weak: generic claim about chatbots closing deals. Strong: “As Harvard Business Review reported… Elena, founder of Product Hunt, notes…”. Unlike SEO’s backlinks, GEO runs on attributions + brand mentions (no link required).
  2. Relevant statistics — numbers give LLMs something extractable to cite. Weak: “helped a lot of entrepreneurs”. Strong: “trained over 500 entrepreneurs since 2023, 73% launched within 90 days”.
  3. Cite authoritative sources — Gartner, HBR, government data; reliability transitivity makes your content reliable-by-association. Weak: “most consumers use AI tools”. Strong: “According to a 2025 Capgemini study, 58% of consumers use AI tools for discovery — more than double 2023’s 25%”.
  • Structural rule underneath all three: every paragraph must stand alone. LLMs ingest paragraph-sized chunks into RAG memory — drop the we/our/pricing framing that assumes surrounding context, and write each block as self-contained truth.

Off-site lever 1 — reviews

Industry-dependent platforms (Trustpilot, Yelp, Google etc.). Accumulated review text is crawlable reputation data.

Off-site lever 2 — brand mentions

  • Influencers/heavyweights saying your brand name (no link needed).
  • LLMs crawl high-domain-authority sites hardest: Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube.
  • You can mint your own citations: LinkedIn posts about your company, YouTube videos — transcripts are easily crawlable via YouTube’s APIs.
  • Notably absent: Instagram/TikTok — login walls block crawlers. Fine channels, weak GEO.

Measurement — Claude + Zapier MCP instead of GA archaeology

  1. Claude → Settings → Connectors → add Zapier connector; authorize; set permission “always allow” (her personal-account choice).
  2. At mcp.zapier.com → Apps → add tool → Google Analytics → enable all tools (reports, measurements, everything).
  3. Then just ask Claude: “look at my referral traffic — how much came from LLMs like ChatGPT?” It queries GA via Zapier MCP and returns the breakdown; follow-ups produce month-by-month charts or whole reports/spreadsheets, on autopilot if wanted.

Her own baseline was embarrassingly low — stated openly — with a follow-up video promised as she improves over 6–12 months. Free GEO/agents course funnel: paulkams.com/free (flagged).
