Interview Hack: The Three-Part Opener

The Problem

When they ask: “Tell me about yourself.”

Most candidates start with: “My name is [name], I graduated from…”

You just lost them at “graduated.”

The Solution: Three-Part Opener

Skip your name. Skip your degree. Skip the history lesson.

Instead, lead with what you DO now.

Part 1: Present (10 seconds)

“I’m currently a [role] at [company], where I focus on [key skill].”

Part 2: Past (ONE sentence)

“Before this, I worked in [past field] where I built [relevant skill].”

Part 3: Future (Connect to THEM)

“This role excites me because [why it fits your goals].”

The Formula

PRESENT → PAST → FUTURE

• Present: What you do now
• Past: One sentence background
• Future: Why this role

Example

“I currently work as a project manager at [Company], where I lead cross-functional teams to deliver products on time.

Before this, I spent 3 years in operations, which taught me how to handle tight deadlines and solve problems fast.

That’s why I’m excited about this role — it combines my project management skills with your company’s mission.”
