Browsers Are Dead — Claude Just Replaced Them

The Thesis
AI browsers were supposed to be the future. But something bigger is happening: Codex and Claude Code are turning into the main place knowledge work gets done.
The argument: we spent 2024-2025 building “AI browsers” (Dia, SigmaOS, Arc’s AI features) — browsers with AI bolted on. But the real shift isn’t a better browser. It’s that knowledge workers are moving their work into the terminal, where Claude Code and Codex live.
Instead of:
- Browser → search → read → copy → paste → write → publish
It becomes:
- Terminal + Claude Code → “find the info, process it, produce the output”
The browser becomes a peripheral. The AI agent is the new desktop.
Why It Matters
| Era | Primary Interface | How Work Gets Done |
|---|---|---|
| 1990s | Desktop (Windows/Mac) | Open app → do thing |
| 2000s-2020s | Web browser | Search → read → switch tabs |
| 2025+ | AI terminal (Claude Code / Codex) | “Do this task” → agent executes |
The AI coding agent isn’t just for coding. It’s becoming the universal work surface — you describe what you need, and it navigates your tools, files, and data to produce it.
