Key Points
Boris Cherny (creator of Claude Code) on how it came to be.
- It was kind of an accident. He joined Anthropic’s Labs team (a prototyping team, revived) in late 2024. The mission: figure out the next big product while pushing the model frontier to support a product that didn’t exist yet.
- “Product overhang”: the model could already do things no product had captured. In coding tools at the time there was autocomplete and Q&A, but the agent “couldn’t really write code” — and until recently the model wasn’t good enough to.
- They went all in on a pure coding agent. “It kind of sucked at the beginning” — wrote maybe 10–20% of his code for a while.
- Why Anthropic was positioned for it: they’d always cared about coding, tool use, and computer use — because the company exists to research AI safety, and those are core research directions.
